The history of the Philippines before Spanish colonisation is hard to pinpoint thanks to the many different sources that influenced its growth and development over many hundreds (or even thousands) of years.
However, once the Spanish arrived, the history of the Philippines moved onto a much more defined path. From the arrival of Ferdinand Magellan and the expeditions across the islands to the subsequent period of colonial rule across the archipelago, the country found itself being managed and steered by a single nation almost exclusively for the first time in its known history.
