{"id":344,"date":"2019-09-09T16:24:24","date_gmt":"2019-09-09T16:24:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/historylearning.com\/blog\/?p=344"},"modified":"2019-09-12T13:49:58","modified_gmt":"2019-09-12T13:49:58","slug":"couple-unearth-silver-coins-dating-back-to-battle-of-hastings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/historylearning.com\/blog\/couple-unearth-silver-coins-dating-back-to-battle-of-hastings\/","title":{"rendered":"Couple unearth silver coins dating back to Battle of Hastings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A couple has unearthed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/news\/uk-news\/metal-detecting-couple-find-one-19003912\">a hoard of thousands of silver coins<\/a> that date back to the era of the <a href=\"http:\/\/historylearning.com\/index.php?id=515\">Battle of Hastings in 1066<\/a> and provide potential evidence of medieval tax evasion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Discovered by Lisa Grace and Adam Staples while metal detecting in the Chew Valley, the coins are said to offer an interesting glimpse into life after the <a href=\"http:\/\/historylearning.com\/index.php?id=3382\">Norman invasion<\/a> and depict both <a href=\"http:\/\/historylearning.com\/index.php?id=512\">William the Conqueror<\/a> and defeated King Harold II.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grace and Staples said: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;It&#8217;s an amazing feeling to have unearthed this spectacular hoard. We&#8217;ve been dreaming of this for 15 years but it&#8217;s finally come true. It went from one coin, three coins, 30 coins and gradually progressed. It took about four, five hours to dig it up.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Experts have also revealed that the coins show signs of being tampered with due to the mixed designs. In fact, they\u2019re thought to provide evidence that the person who was striking the coins was using an old design in order to avoid using an up-to-date coining tool.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_347\" class=\"wp-caption thumbnail aligncenter\" style=\"width: 507px;\">\n\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-347\" src=\"https:\/\/historylearning.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/507px-A_hoard_of_199_Anglo_-_Saxon_and_Norman_pennies.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"507\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/historylearning.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/507px-A_hoard_of_199_Anglo_-_Saxon_and_Norman_pennies.jpg 507w, https:\/\/historylearning.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/507px-A_hoard_of_199_Anglo_-_Saxon_and_Norman_pennies-198x300.jpg 198w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 507px) 100vw, 507px\" \/>\n\t\t\t\t<figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">The hoard was discovered in fields in Somerset.<\/figcaption>\n\t\t\t<\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, they offer an example of how French-speaking officials struggled to understand the English language, which has been poorly stamped onto some of the coins.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In total, the metal detectorists found 2,528 coins in the field during January of this year, rendering the hoard the largest Norman find since 1833.
