I want another.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2015 Virginia Woolf, Orlando<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The National Trust is to celebrate the gay history of many of its iconic properties with a year-long programme of events telling the lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and queer (LGBTQ) story of its homes and halls.<\/p>\n<p>Virginia Woolf\u2019s great novel Orlando, an exploration of gender difference and sexual identity and about a gender-changing protagonist whose life spans the 400-year history of Knole House in Kent, anchors the trust\u2019s 2017 Prejudice and Pride season.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The book was inspired by Woolf\u2019s lover, Vita Sackville-West, who was born and brought up at Knole and, while devotedly married to husband Harold Nicolson, also had relationships with partners of the same sex (as did he).<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_206\" class=\"wp-caption thumbnail alignnone\" style=\"width: 770px;\">\n\t\t\t\t<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/historylearning.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/The-Painted-Staircase-in-the-Hall-at-Hanbury-Hall-Worcestershire.-Credit-National-Trust-Images-Dennis-Gilbert.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-206 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/historylearning.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/The-Painted-Staircase-in-the-Hall-at-Hanbury-Hall-Worcestershire.-Credit-National-Trust-Images-Dennis-Gilbert-986x1024.jpg\" alt=\"The Painted Staircase in the Hall at Hanbury Hall, Worcestershire. The Staircase was painted by Sir James Thornhill (1675-1734), c.1710.<\/figcaption>\n\t\t\t<\/figure>\n<p>The programme, which includes events at Knole; Sutton House in Hackney, London; Hanbury Hall, Worcestershire and Smallhythe Place, Kent will tell the histories of the men and women who shaped the properties in which they lived, challenging conventional notions of gender and sexuality in the process.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the course of the year, online and published resources will be available including a podcast series and a new guidebook exploring LGBTQ heritage in trust places.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sarah Waters, author of the bestselling novel Tipping the Velvet and who is involved with the project, said: \u201cThese days we can all be a bit bolder about exploring and enjoying the UK\u2019s rich heritage of sex and gender diversity.
